The actual term "Art Brut" is French for "Raw Art" and was coined in 1945 to describe the artwork of children and outsiders (naive artists & mentally ill). Because of the nature of the artists, their work was seen as more honest and sincere. These two qualities are prominent in a lot today's indie rock and thus the band Art Brut chose a winner for a name. They're pretty unconventional when it comes to vocals - check out the contrast on their cover of We Are Scientists' "The Great Escape". Isn't it awesome when bands cover other current bands?
