Not
(That) Sexually Related Anymore
Growing
up, we’ve all dreaded that awkward conversation with our parents about the
birds and the bees. Today, that phrase has a new meaning – the meaning of good
music. The Bird and the Bee’s Greg Kurstin and Inara George have been enjoying some considerable success since the
release of their self-titled debut album and uber-sexy single “Fucking
Boyfriend”. Check out what the duo had to say to Band of the Day, in…
- by Mattias and Dave-Os -
1. Love your style. How would you describe your
fashion sense?
I: My fashion sense is like psychedelic 60's. Definitely 60's influenced.
Mattias:
Musically and fashionably who are your influences?
I: Musically – Prince. Fashionably – Audrey Hepburn in “Two for the Road”. She’s got a mystique fashion sense.
2. Did the guy you sang about in “Fucking Boyfriend” ever become your boyfriend?
I: He’s more of a fictional character that all girls have maybe experienced. Maybe some boys too. It’s about a person that’s just leading you on a little maybe, but you're taking it. You know what you're doing. It’s younger; teenage.
Mattias:
Well I’m 21, so I’ve never been in such a situation.
I: Ah, you're just getting there.
3. Elaborate on your Second Life listening lounge.
I: It’s this experimental thing. Our label was interested in this concept of being able to listen to music and explore music or a band’s kind of thing... I’m not really making any sense, but we didn't really have anything to do with it, so I don’t know. I think they are curious to see what it will do.
4. What’s your favourite activity to do again and again and again?
G:
Some sort of eating or chewing. Eating cookies.
I: Chewing. Yeah, eating. I like to eat.
Mattias:
Yeah, I can do that all day. Conversely, what’s something you do again and
again that you wish you could stop doing?
I & G: Eating cookies. *laughs*
5. How does the actual story of the birds and the bees go?
I: We don’t have kids so we never had to give that talk. Why it was called the birds and the bees - it had something to do with a poem by like Blake or something...
G: I don’t know the exact story, but I think that anyone who is interested in it needs to go to YouTube and find the Sarah Silverman version of it...
6. Bird versus Bee - who would win in a fight?
I: I'd say the bird. The bird can eat the bee. If it was a bird against one bee, the bird would win, but if it was a bird against [numerous] bees, the bees would probably win.
G: Yeah, because bees work together. I think if it was one bird against one bee, the bee would sting the bee, but the bird would be like “huh”.
Mattias:
Yeah, six bees would do me. I’m allergic to pain.
I: I
like that - allergic to pain. *laughs*
7. You’re touring with Lily Allen. What’s your relationship like with her?
G: I produced like three songs on her record and that’s how I met her.
I: And the reason why we thanked her [on our album] was because on Myspace, when she had heard some of our songs, she sent out a note to all her Myspace fans.
8. What’s the response for your album so far?
I: I think it’s been good. It’s going steady.
G: Yeah, it’s been good. Definitely a lot of positive.
9. What's it like having a broken heart?
I: It
really sucks. *laughs*
Mattias:
I bet.
10. Who would you like to see next on Band of the Day?
I: I’d like Doctor Dog or The Little Ones.
And
that’s that. I think we can all agree that the band’s response to the bird
versus bee fight is reasonable and that you too would choose those outcomes.
Just make sure you don’t experiment that at home, or you’ll end up with a big
ole’ mess.
Finish
him,
