The Starting Line have been rockin’ out since 1999 back when frontman Kenny was still the tender age of 14.  Eight years later, they’re still rippin’ it up on stage making all the teenies swoon.  With the recent release of their third studio album “Direction”, we at BotD thought it would be a great idea to pick their brains.  We caught up with Kenny Vasoli (vocals/bass), Matt Watts (guitar), and Mike Golla (guitar) at this year’s Warped Tour for a five-minute session of…

10 Questions with The Starting Line

1. If you could sum up your new album “Direction” in one sentence, OR five words, what would you say?

K: “Holy Fuckin Shit, Really Really?”

Mattias: If we said six words, you could have had a full sentence there.

K: We’ll let you guys fill in the blank.

2. You guys started out at a pretty young age.  Would you say that was better for you as a band, or worse?

Ma: I don’t think it makes a difference.  I mean, I think new bands touring all have to get their feet wet at some point or another. I think all of us were ready to do it.  We all kind of grew up on the road, so we’re used to it by now.

K: It’s good that we started out young because we’re all still good looking after seven years. We’re not all old and… you know.

Mattias: What band do you think is ugly now?

K: Ugliest band ever? Motorhead!

Ma: They’re pretty ugly.

Mi: AC/DC’s pretty ugly.

3. Other than playing your set, what’s your favourite thing to do at the Warped Tour?

Mi: Probably watching bands.  There really isn’t a dull moment if you don’t let there be.

Ma: There are so many bands.

4. Who are you going to watch this tour?

K: I’m stoked to see New Found [Glory]; I’m stoked for Circa Survive.  Those are the two big ones for me.

Ma: I’m stoked for The Almost

5.  Literally, what’s your favourite direction? (eg. Up, Left, Southeast, North etc.)

K: Straight to the top baby!

Ma: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Select, Start.

Mi: I don’t know… down?

6. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what would be the three things that you’d like to have with you?

K: Food, a hot woman, and an Ipod.

Ma: A chef… A boat…

Mi: That’s really all you’d need: A boat and gasoline.

7. What’s your favourite movie or TV show that’s “based on a true story”?

Ma: Deadliest Catch. Badass.

K: How To Catch a Predator *laughs*

Mattias: Were you ever on it?

K: Not yet; I’m waiting for my big break.

Mattias: I heard a lot of those predators have The Starting Line in their Top 8.

K: We can only hope.

8. How far is the finish line from the starting line?

K: Well it depends on what kind of race it is.

Mi: One furlong.

K: How far is a furlong?

Mi: No one really knows.

9. Who would win in a race: A dog with two legs, or a turtle with ten legs?

K: Probably the dog.  It’s would just drag its butt. I’d pick the dog.

Mi: Me too.

Ma: I’ll go turtle.

10.  Who would you like to see next on Band of the Day?

K: Motorhead… and ZZ Top. 

While we may disagree with The Starting Line’s opinion on Motorhead, we will defend to the death their right to say it.  We personally think that the ugliest band out there is B4-4… you know, in an ugly sexy sort of way.  Here’s to hoping Kenny finally gets his big break on To Catch A Predator.
