Rock & Roll Royalty

The Subways have blasted through the UK music scene with rock anthems like “Oh Yeah” and “Rock & Roll Queen”. With a growing fan base in North America, the band hit all the major stops on the continent and Band of the Day caught bassist/vocalist Charlotte Cooper and drummer Josh Morgan when they came into town for…

10 Questions with The Subways

- by Mattias and Dave-Os -

1. You guys have had 8 EP’s. Is there any chance that you’ll be releasing them in a mega pack?

C: That would be a good idea. I thought you were going to ask me to name them all! That would be cool. That’s a good idea, thanks!

2. What do you guys eat in your submarine sandwiches?

J: I like meatballs in mine.

C: I don’t really eat sandwiches.

Mattias: If you could add anything to a sub sandwich that no one else has ever added before, what would you put in it?

C: You could put some chocolate raisins in it. Chocolate raisins are good. They’re my favourite thing.

3. What criteria does a girl have to fit to be a rock n’ roll queen?

C: I suppose you just have got to be free-spirited. You don’t have to be any particular type of person, just very open-minded.

Mattias: Is there a look?

C: Not really a look. I think the rock n’ roll thing is “looking how you look.”

Mattias: Josh, what do you look for in a rock n’ roll queen?

J: My girlfriend, I think she’s perfect.

4. Upcoming concerts: you’ve got Lollapalooza, you’ll be playing with Billy Talent pretty soon…What are you most excited about?

J: Billy Talent. We love them.

C: Yeah, Billy Talent’s gonna be rockin’. I bet they get down really good in Germany.

J: Yeah, I love Germany.

Dave-os: Is Billy Talent big in the UK?

C: Yeah. I don’t think they’ve been over for a while, but when their first album was released, it did pretty well.

5. What can we expect from your next album?

C: It’s going to be different. There’s going to be darker stuff, but there’s going to be some pop songs too.

J: There are a couple of happy songs.

C: There’s a pop one, there are some melancholy ones…

J: …Metal. *laughs* We gave it a little metal.

C: We’re just trying a lot of new things out. I think that’s what we’re looking forward to on this album. It’s really kind of experimental with all different kinds of music.

Mattias: Is it coming out soon?

C: We’re hoping to record it at the end of the year after we finish all the touring.

6. If any song title out there could describe you guys, what song would it be?

J: [To Charlotte]: Just pick your favourite band and we’ll make it roll - just to make it easier. I’m going to pick Prodigy. I’ll say “Voodoo People”. *laughs*

Dave-os: What about “Smack My Bitch Up”?

J: *laughs*
C: How about “Butterflies and Hurricanes” by Muse.

J: Hey, that’s pretty cool. That’s a mix of personality.
C: We can have rocky moments and melancholy moments.

7. On your tour diary, you mentioned that you’ve partied with The Go! Team, Franz Ferdinand, Kings of Leon…Who’s your favourite band to party with?

C: There’s quite a few. The Magic Numbers are always a good one.

J: I partied with The Shys. I loved that; that was fun.

C: Taking Back Sunday were very cool. We’ve just been on a tour with them and they’re very cool to hang out with.

Mattias: If you could party with anyone you haven’t met, who’d you want to party with?

C: I bet Madonna could show you a good time. She could teach me how to dance really well.

8. If there was a cute - but rabid - puppy biting everyone at one of your concerts, what would you do?

C: *pauses* You’d have to get rid of the puppy.

*Awww’s all around*
C: I know it’s cute, but it’s biting people!

J: No, keep it. Let everyone suffer.

C: Or maybe we should split up the people we like and don’t like and let it run free.

J: That’s a good idea. Put it in the middle by the mosh pit. We’ll put the cute puppy where everyone likes to get bitten.

9. Your band used to be named Platypus. If you could be either a mammal or a reptile, which would you be?

J: Reptile. Definitely.
C: Yeah, reptile because we’re mammals now. It would be nice to be something different.

J: Yeah, reptiles are just cool.

C: Yeah, I’d like to be like a little gecko.

J: The ones that go really fast.

C: The really tiny ones that slither.

J: I held one in Australia. They’re really fast.
C: They hang out on rocks and stuff.
Dave-os: …You guys would want to be one of those?

C&J: *laughs*

10. Who would you like to see next on Band of the Day?

J: The Vines.

C: I’ll pick The Like.
