Thursday’s fourth full-length album, “A City By the Light
Divided,” yet again showcases the band’s natural ability to compose meaningful
music. Taking the stage again at this year’s Warped Tour, Band of the Day was
able to perform a quick interview with Andrew Everding of this passionate band. Read on to find out his responses
to some serious and some not-so-serious questions in…
- by Mattias and
Dave-Os -
1. Your music tackles some pretty serious subject
matter. What made your band go in that direction?
A: It’s something we’ve always been kind of doing. We don’t
really want to sing songs about girls and break-ups and romance; we’d rather
write about interpersonal politics and sexuality and the things that are prevalent
right now. We’re not being overly political, it’s just we have a lot of stories
to tell. A lot of it’s about Geoff’s life and the things that he’s been
through. [For example,] “At This Velocity” is about an incident on an airplane
we were all on.
2. Yeah, “At This Velocity” is about your almost
plane crash. What did you feel like when you got off the plane?
A: I actually wasn’t too worried about it because I’m used to
flying. I like flying. I used to be a pilot when I was 16 so I was okay with
it. It didn’t seem that hectic; it was just when we were landing that there
were some squalls and the plane kind of turned to its side a little bit before
it landed. I was fine but everybody else was pretty much freaked out though; it
was a little hectic. There were definitely some people on the airplane that
were yelling when that happened.
Mattias: Was anyone in the band crying?
A: No. A lot of hand clutching though, like “Holy shit!”
3. Warped Tour crowds usually respond really well to
your music. What’s something you would like them to take home from a show?
A: I like when crowds listen to us and they come home feeling
positive about their life and realize that everybody on this tour is a normal
person. There are no superstars or anything; we’re just normal people and
anybody can do this.
4. The Bastards of the Young documentary: For all
the Canadian people who might not know about it, what is it?
A: It’s kind of about the New Jersey scene: the development of
it, basement shows, history… There’s a little bit about Eyeball Records. It’s a
cool project to be involved with and Geoff explains things like when he used to
put on basement shows.
5. What’s one thing you haven’t done in life that
you’d like to do?
A: I’d like to go to Iceland.
Mattias: Why? What do they have there?
A: Four different coloured beaches, hot springs… I don’t know.
I’ve been fascinated with Iceland for a long time and I’ve never been there.
6. If your band had a reality show, what would it be
called?
A: God, that’s a good question. Let me think for a minute…I am
totally stumped on that man. I don’t know what I would say. I wouldn’t want any
joke names according to our band name though…“Tucker’s a Maniac.” That’s what I
would call it.
Mattias: “Tucker’s a Maniac?” What would it be about?
A: Or maybe “Short-Shorts” because Tucker wears short-shorts.
Mattias: So would it revolve around Tucker and his short-shorts?
A: Absolutely.
7. If you had to make a magic omelette, what are
three ingredients you would put in it?
A: A magic omelette? Food items or non-food items?
Mattias: Anything.
A: A magic omelette that I could actually eat?
Mattias: If you wanted to. I’d eat it.
A: Alright…I’d actually use food items: Oysters, peanuts, and
pickles.
Mattias: Would you eat it?
A: No, I would just like to see it.
Mattias: We’re going to give that a try and then e-mail your
people.
8. In a recent interview, The Hush Sound said that
their least favourite day of the week is Thursday. Any retaliation?
A: Well we don’t really tie ourselves too closely to the day of
the week other than our name, so I don’t really have any retaliation. I don’t
like to have any ill will with people.
9. On your MySpace you have Ben Sherman as one of
your friends. Also, in the “Count 5-4-3-2-1” video, there’s a target on the
curtain that looks like it could be the Ben Sherman target. What’s your
relationship with Ben Sherman?
A: We’re just friends with the company. We like their clothes
but that target doesn’t really have anything to with the Ben Sherman thing.
10. Who would you like to see next on Band of the
Day?
A: Depeche Mode.
Mattias: Less famous?
A: Dead or alive?
Mattias: Where are they from?
A: No, I’m asking if the band can be dead. Because I would like
to see some interviews with…I don’t know. You should interview Saves the Day.
Who doesn’t like short-shorts? Another interview will be posted up
very soon, so make sure you come back to check it out.
We’re always around,
