Sixteen
seasons later
Idle
Sons (previously known as “Slurpymundae”) know the value of patience. The
Burlington band’s first attempt to debut a major album was called “Hell or High
Water,” but the disc was never officially released due to various complications.
After sixteen seasons of hard work and determination, everything is finally
falling into place for this band that never gave up. “Sixteen Seasons” hits
stores today, May 2nd 2006, and Band of the Day recently caught up with Mike, Ryan, Bruce, and Sean of Idle Sons for a
quick little interview. Due to some technical malfunctions, our infamous “10
Questions” will be cut down to a smaller by proportion, yet somehow equally
abundant…
7 questions with Idle Sons
- by Mattias and Dave-Os -
1. You guys have waited 4 long
years, or “16 seasons” for this big break. A lot of bands can’t even stay
together that long. What advice could
you give aspiring artists who are in their
“waiting” period?
M: Just to have perseverance and strive forward, you know? Keep going and don’t quit because the bands that don’t quit are usually the bands that get a shot at making a record and putting one out.
R:
Make sure you’re in it for the right reasons.
2. Mike and Shawn played hockey
together. Bruce and Ryan played baseball
together. Who would win on a baseball
match on ice?
B: I think
I would because I played Baseball and Hockey.
M: Bruce has the upper hand there.
B: I
couldn’t say I played either one particularly well…
R: He had a 75-mile an hour fastball. I got the bone structure to back it up.
B: He
means kilometers.
3. In an article, Rage Against
the Machine was mentioned to be a big inspiration. Do you have any favourite RATM songs?
M: Mine would be “Know Your Enemy.”
S:
“Know Your Enemy”
B:
“Township Rebellion”
R:
“People of the Sun”
Dave-os:
“Bulls on Parade” anyone?
Everyone:
They’re all great songs.
B: Oh, and
the entire “Battle of Los Angeles” record.
Dave-os:
That’s a wicked CD.
B: Fuckin’
amazing.
R: What was that other one? It came out on a soundtrack...was it on the “Armageddon” soundtrack?
S: Oh,
“No Shelter.”
R:
That song is amazing.
S: It
was on “Godzilla” or something. Yah
that song’s amazing.
4. What was life like before
becoming a band, living in Burlington Ontario?
R: We’ve sort of always been a band…and it’s always been [that way].
M: Yah we’ve been together for just over 10 years. So this is sort of all we know. We started in high school. We don’t really know any different.
R: When we started the band, not even all of us could drive. We were still getting allowance. *laughs* We’ve grown up while being in the band. I don’t really remember anything before it. I don’t know about the rest of you guys.
5. If you had more than one head,
how many heads would you have and why?
M: I’d say four heads so that one could be looking in each direction at all times.
S: …I
got nothing. Pass.
B: I would have 101 heads, like the great gods and gladiators of Ancient Rome.
M: One for every Dalmatian?
B: *laughs* Yeah that works.
R: I’d want seven. I’d keep six of them covered up and everyday open a new one…like I’d have a Monday head, a Tuesday head… and just have a week full of heads.
6. If you could be in any movie,
as character, what movie would you be in?
M:
That’s kind of hard…I think I’d want to be in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
and be one of his animals because he treats them so well.
S:
Definitely Russell Crowe in Gladiator.
B: If I
could be any character, I’d like to be a member of the Rebellion from The
Empire Strikes Back – the greatest Star Wars movie.
7. Who would you like to see next
on Band of the Day?
Idle
Sons: Oliver Black and Wintersleep [BotD #55].
This is
a great group of guys and guaranteed any success they have coming is well
deserved. Unfortunately we were unable to retrieve what character Ryan would
want to be, but you can bet your balls it was a good one. Thanks to Idle Sons
for a great interview and FYI, yet another BotD interview is coming up.
Stay
tooned,
The BotD
